Britain has been warned that it faces an energy investment freeze and a heightened risk of blackouts after the industry watchdog called for the deepest ever investigation into the big six power suppliers.

Sam Laidlaw, chief executive of British Gas parent group Centrica, said the building of new power plants would be set back by the climate of uncertainty, increasing the threat of power shortages.

Calm down chaps, it's only an investigation. You'd think you had something to hide

I love how capitalism is supposed to encourage competition but all it produces is price fixing. And this is what they want to encourage in the NHS!

Capitalism doesn't encourage competition. That's why most governments in capitalist systems have departments or authorities whose job it is to ensure competition takes place. Capitalism is about optimising the return on investment to shareholders, that's all it really cares about. Sadly, the most efficient way to do that is with a monopoly. Or if not that, a cartel.

The idea we are by definition best served by pure capitalism is actually bunk. We are better off with regulated capitalism, where we maximise it's benefits and minimise it's nastier effects. The problem is we've pretty much given up with proper regulation in some sectors.
