I've a feeling that's the sweetener for further privatisation.

The entire reason you have centralisation came down to cost. It was cheaper to have fewer specialists in one hospital than several in multiple "cottage" hospitals.

He blamed the European working time directive for damaging healthcare in the NHS

Actually no it improved care. Patients weren't being seen by doctors who hadn't slept in three days.

waiting time targets introduced under Labour became an impediment to care in too many cases

Introduced by labour whilst Stevens was the advisor.

it could mean hospitals taking over the running of some GP services

So basically shut down local GP surgeries? That's very clever(!).

Quote:
Stevens was president of global health and group executive vice-president at UnitedHealth, a US private healthcare firm

So he has absolute no vested interest whatsoever?

To be fair, there's not a cat in hell's chance of that particular bit happening, especially not in the run up to a GE. Look at how many MP's have been booted by their constituents over the closure of local hospitals. Imagine what the effect of removing GP services in a constituency would be. Nobody in a seat who has less than a 10,000 majority is going to want to touch that with a bargepole.

Yeah, well, it's not as if that's any surprise, is it? What exactly is a 'group executive vice-president' anyway, sounds like a complete sinecure. And the obvious question is, did he get those posts before or after being an adviser to government health policy?
