Girls shouldn't be forced to do science

In particular this quote : "Biology and nature, he suggested, will generally nudge females away from [Science and Engineering]"

The sexism goes both ways, I wouldn't much envy being a teenage boy wanting to study humanities or other perceived "soft sciences" in the current climate.

/Facepalm.

Nobody should be forced to do science at least no more than they're forced to have a general education. Everyone should know how (for example) things are likely to move under a force, or that chemicals mixed together can have untoward consequences for the same reason we require everyone to be able to read and write and do basic sums - you need to know a certain amount of science to be a proper functioning member of society. But forcing people to go beyond that, for whatever reason is a self-defeating action. Peopel who dont' want to do things aren't motivated to do them well and therefore probably do them badly. That's true of all learning.

or for example the gender imbalance in teaching, particularly in younger age groups. All of these things are bad, whichever direction they run in.

I really enjoyed home economics when I was at school, but I wasn't allowed to take it as an option - mother wouldn't let me and it clashed with Computer Studies anyway...

In France all subjects are compulsory up to A levels, the difference is the number hours of teaching and weighing of each depending the child's desire to aim at a literary or sciency career. It does end up making really heavy weeks, Monday to Saturday lunchtime

My school shoved anyone who had a vague chance of going to Unjversity into sciences, regardless of whether they wanted it or not. So being told I could not do art at all ever, I chose to do biology because, yes it's ingesting, but the scope for drawing (even observational drawing, which I'm not fond of) was better than any other science subject. Biology teacher asked my why I wasn't doing art......

Stupid school.
