The report calls for a new national organisation, Feeding Britain, run jointly by the government and voluntary groups, to oversee food banks and eradicate hunger. It also urges food companies to do more to tackle waste and proposes a rise in the minimum wage.

Conservative MPs said the plan smacked of nationalisation, and the business minister Matthew Hancock said the growth in food banks was partly because they were now more widely known about.

Heaven forbid you'd nationalise erasing poverty. Heaven forbid you'd fcuking nationalise anything. And the cheek of people; using those food banks they'd heard about!

I'm starting to think we should all keep pigs and feed them Tory [LIFTED]. That'll solve quite a few issues :P

Am I the only one thinking letting government get involved would only mean less food for the poor and more cash diverted towards people who are sympathetic to the tories? How about the food banks concentrate on feeding people and the government concentrate on making the food banks unnecessary? I know which I trust to get their part of the job done better.

I’m not in favour of food banks. I’m firmly of the belief that if you are in dire straits, then the state has the duty to pick up the mess. How we look after each other defines us as a society. If people want to argue the toss about how British Values are changing, then this is truly the defining datum.

Foodbanks are, IMHO, wrong. We are a developed nation, rich, and (if you believe Gideon) growing fast again. We can afford not to make foodbanks exist.

I can't imagine anyone wants foodbanks to exist.

yeah, well, the people who are claiming the country is rich and growing are also the ones who claim that food banks create their own demand. So don't expect a solution any time soon.
