Faster iPhones and a new TV box are likely to dominate Apple's launch event on Wednesday, but a tweak to the firm's mobile web browser will arguably be just as far-reaching.

For the first time, Apple will allow adverts to be blocked by the iPhone and iPad versions of Safari.

There’s a bit of hand-wringing about this from the advertisers, and the report linked to from the article is interesting. However, I think one of the main reasons for blocking ads is the dreadfulness of them. Rolling videos, they still use Flash, and some still break out of their allotted space.

The advertisers only have themselves to blame. When you go to a website and it downloads 100KB in a second or so, but the site needs 20MB and over a minute to finish being displayed, there is something desperately wrong with the business model. Add into that distributing malware through ads, ads taking over the whole screen, one line of text per page, so that you get more ad impressions... The industry needs to rethink how it works.

I de-installed Flash back in January and I haven't missed it yet (as opposed to noticing that the experience is better, because things load faster).
