Syria's President Bashar al-Assad has visited Moscow on his first overseas trip since the civil war broke out in his country in 2011, state TV says.

During the surprise visit, he held talks with President Vladimir Putin.

Imagine popping round to your mate Vlad for a surprise visit. I hope he took some cake. It would be rude not to.

'There's a civil war on!'

'It's Putin!'

It does seem slightly... risky of a leader in his situation to leave the seat of power for any period of time. Much easier to stage a coup if the bloke you're kicking out isn't even there.

Not risky at all, if your mate can reinstate you.

Provided Putin doesn't offer him a nice steaming cup of glow in the dark tea he's probably going to be fine.

I think if whoever came in made it clear that they'd be as pro-Russian as their predecessors, Assad would suddenly find Putin wasn't actually his friend at all. 'Risk Russian lives to get you back into power? Well, you see, it's difficult...'
