Vandals scrub 'Blackmore' from over 20 village signs Read m


	Quote: Mystery surrounds a series of targeted acts of vandalism, where the word Blackmore has been painted over on around 20 different signs in the village and beyond. The signs targeted on Saturday and Sunday night included road signs for Blackmore Road and Blackmore Mead and signs leading to the village from Kelvedon Hatch and Ingatestone. Vandals also snapped off the Blackmore arm of two wooden fingerpost signs and even the village stocks have been doused with paint.

This is just odd, and real. I saw a lot of those signs yesterday. They are genuinely painted out like that, and the stocks on the village green have been daubed with paint.

They've got it wrong anyway I think. The 'old word' related to skin colour is black*a*more , 'Blackmore' probably just comes from 'black moor'.

So I expect you are right there. Though “Moor” was a name for Muslims who lived in Spain and other areas. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moors

I have no reason to see why they would name a village after a group of people of Muslim persuasion. Unless they were coming over here, settling in a small village, opening up tea rooms, and arranging a duck crossing.

Locally, when Dartington Art School closed, someone went round all of the Dartington road signs and painted out the 'art' in Dartington leaving 'D___ington'. As protests go, I thought it was quite imaginative.
