Well, Chilcot seems to be going well for those who were involved in the decision making process.

Quote:
Mr Blair told the Inquiry that the difficulties encountered in Iraq after the invasion could not have been known in advance. We do not agree that hindsight is required. The risks of internal strife in Iraq, active Iranian pursuit of its interests, regional instability, and Al Qaeda activity in Iraq, were each explicitly identified before the invasion.

Quote:
Mr Blair had been warned, however, that military action would increase the threat from Al Qaeda to the UK and to UK interests. He had also been warned that an invasion might lead to Iraq's weapons and capabilities being transferred into the hands of terrorists."

Did anybody ever actually think it was a last resort?

Not even at the time. At best it shows Blair was (by that point) feeling utterly entitled and incapable of reaching a conclusion that his actions might end up having more negative than positive consequences. Not actual megalomania, but possibly some of the precursors of it.

I do begin to think the system the Americans have where someone can server at most two terms as the country's leader has merit. Every time in my lifetime a Prime minister has been on the job for more than say 6 years they end making a complete arse of things.

Tony Blair could face contempt of parliament motion over Iraq war | Politics | The Guardian

Eagle's taking the piss already. 'Learning lessons'? How many times have we heard that in the last year alone on a full range of subjects?

Should we just forget that British pilots were bombing Syria without the stated parliamentary approval even after all of this?

Whitehall’s secret advice on Chilcot will not be released | UK news | The Guardian
https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/201 ... n-iraq-war

Quote:
“The Chilcot inquiry’s treatment of the legality of the war is curious,” said Philippe Sands QC, an expert on international law and director of the centre on international courts and tribunals at University College London.

“It claims not to have addressed legality, yet concludes that the UK has undermined the authority of the security council, found that ‘the circumstances in which it was decided that there was a legal basis for UK military action were far from satisfactory’, and obtained 37 independent submissions which point overwhelmingly to the manifest illegality of the war.

'National security! National security!'
