If Twitter doesn't get it's act together soon some sort of campaign will make the decision for it. And then finance will be it's next big issue as a result.

By exactly what mechanism is that going to work? Twitter control the platform. They're the only ones who can do anything about it. The article points that out in stark terms and the fact that they aren't/can't doing anything, despite being asked. So exactly how are a bunch of people who have no control over the platform or the content on it going to stop people doing odious things?

The answer is simple : they can't, and they won't, although they'll tell each other they are making a difference.

I find what's happening pretty repellant and people should have the right to go about their lives without being subjected to this stuff but shouting about it / having a 'campaign' is about as clear an example of titling at windmills as I can think of.

Twitter's finances are effectively separate from this kind of thing. Unless you can get 10's of millions of people deleting their twitter accounts - which simply isn't going to happen - what people do or do not tweet, and whether it's acceptable or not, is pretty irrelevant to whether twitter is a viable business.

Reality check : The fundamental issue here is not the platform. If by some miracle you could actually stop it on twitter, the people doing this would just shift to G+ or instagram, or even make an entirely different social network for themselves. You can't stop this unless you change people, and good luck with that.

All I'm saying is Twitter can't keep doing nothing, or at least have that perception. The thing survives on celebrities in terms of public consciousness and it's relatively young, so I wouldn't bet against either it being replaced or growing stronger.

Right now they aren't even doing the bare minimum of responding to plain as day widespread abuse issues, or when a bad story gets mainstream attention they put their foot in it! Facebook is no better, for instance, so I get what you're saying. But then FB isn't in as precarious a position to my mind, in any sense.
