The island's schools only changed to a two tier school system a few years ago, which coincided with the role out of the academy scheme - both handled poorly by the LEA and island councillors. One was quoted as saying, when asked about the students being failed by system , "you can't make an omlette without breaking a few eggs", quite smugly. A neighbour, who was there at the time, told me the councillor was lucky to get out alive after that comment. He was the first of many to lose his seat and the next elections.
The whole transition resulted in shocking performance at a number of major schools, which are only now starting to show improvements. A lot of heads and senior teachers have lost their positions over the last 12-18 months.
