Given the time constraints in general practice, this can be very hard to do. We have notices up about DocSpot and similar NHS-sponsored exercise schemes (IIRC the NHS will pay for six gym sessions and after that the patient has to pay for it) but rarely are they taken up.

Being fat can have a lot of causes beyond just overeating. Telling someone they're fat without helping with the underlying reason could push them even further down. Sadly I don't think GPs have time to explore reasons for unhealthy behaviour in a 7 min appointment.

Sounds familiar. My local NHS trust and the City Council have a similar scheme except that all of the actual available slots are during the day so pretty much useless for anyone who has a job. I suspect they'd get a high uptake if they had a mix of availability that included evenings and weekends.
