I've always meant to look into the WS - excuse my ignorance - how do we justify it and what is it really for? It's always seemed indulgent. I'm sure I'm missing something, but...

For one thing it is, or was, an incredible tool for spreading British culture around the globe and never underestimate the propaganda potential. There's a reason it was, until recently, funded by the Foreign Office rather than the licence fee.
Also, I can't help escaping the old legacy of empire thing where the WS is concerned.
