I suspect this kind of bullying has been around forever. It's only recently that it started selling newspapers. Before, it would have been covered over as shameful rather than glamourised in the media spotlight.

Agreed. Currently doing psychiatry and I've seen a fair few people with mental health problems. Some of them were abused as children by other people and when they reported it to their parents, were then punished for saying such horrible things about other people. Back then, sexual abuse didn't happen!
