It seems J.K. Rowling was in line to receive the Presidential Medal Of Freedom back in the days of George W Bush but was denied the award because some members of his administration thought that her books promoted witchcraft. And this from a country that has about a 50% literacy rate.

I've always thought these far right Christians in America couldn't see the wood for the trees when it came to Harry Potter. The books are filled with the most basic Christian messages about right and wrong, but they can't (or don't want to) see them because of the fictional setting.

It happens here. My other half works at a school where the books won’t be found on the library shelves.

Well that would explain why films with subtitles suffer so much in the US.

It would support Bill Mahers assertion that the US public are stupid.

It's not just the US public, look at the consumer drones in this country.

I would agree that there are large numbers of illiterate children and adults here as well. Though I think part is down to targets. Schools do not enter those with marginal expectations as they will drag down the school results.

If Harry Potter gets people reading that is good news.
