... what exactly is it for apart from gadget-w*nking?

I'm confused. :?

I'm more confused how you know all this before the thing's even been confirmed, let alone released for testing. ;)

I don't know anything much but the reports at the moment tout it as a 10" iPhone-notPhone

Quote:
Munster's report noted: "As a point of perspective, iSuppli has reported the bill of materials on the iPhone 3GS is $179 (£108). Backing out the phone functionality, we believe the bill of materials is about $160 (£97). Assuming the tablet is 3x the size of the iPod touch implies a bill of materials for the tablet of around $480 (£291)."

All that really tells you is what it's likely to cost to build, based on an assumption that all other components are the same. It tells us next to nothing about what the hardware finally chosen is. Imagine being 6 months in the past and guessing about the capabilities and price of the Magic Mouse based solely on the Mighty Mouse.
It's far to easy to be led down numerous blind alleys.

Wait and see, as always, wait and see.

Here's the thing : any number of industry commentators have shown in the past that iSuppli don't know their arse from their elbow. The numbers they come up with have next to no relevance to any real world pricing.

It is supposed to be a net tablet. That means web browser, on screen keyboard, apps from the app store... It isn't supposed to be a laptop replacement, it is supposed to be a netbook replacement.

Yep, they don't take into account the manufacturing processes, labour costs etc.

They just take the price of the electrical components and screen and say that is how much a device costs!

I don't think anybody at iSuppli has ever worked in industry.

£400 seems like a lot of money to pay just to get fruit in pill form.

I thought Apple weren't going to make a 'cheap' laptop. Or was this just a rouse to keep sales of the MacBook going and not have consumers wait for this netbook to be released?

Apple always say they're never going to make something until they do.
