I'd say that faith is very important to a lot of people but that this is separate from organised religion.
Having been to three grandparents funerals and one cousins, none of which were in a church (all in a crematorium) I can't say as I missed the church bit. A minister of religion officiated at all three but that was in keeping with the wishes of deceased and I didn't feel it was inappropriate.

I think it does help to have someone who is well versed is speaking at such events to lead the service as the family is quite often not in a condition to do so at the time. How things pan out in the future remains to be seen of course.

None of the weddings I've been to as an adult have been in Churches or other places of worship and I can't say I thought is was odd at all. The ceremony is still every bit as valid as one held in the presence of big G in a church/temple/mosque or whatever.

How religion fares will depend on how the current and future generations choose to observe it. My own feeling is that religious observance in the UK is on the wane, at least as far as Christianity goes.
It is still however vitally important for people, and especially politicians, to have some understanding of religion so that they can at least try to relate to or understand where other people are coming from.
