I don't see the point.

I rarely actually visit the gmail website and tend to use an email client to get my emails from there.

I suppose part of the idea is for people quickly logging in from their phones, new fangled iPad etc to be able to do it all at once. While being shown text ads probably ;)

I could pick any twitter feeds through my RSS news reader if I wanted so again why would I want to use gmail for this? I have avoided Gmail so far so why would I be encouraged to sign up to gmail because of twitter?

I'm guessing it's currently for people who already use Gmail, but it's worth remembering that it's user base grows every day, so keeping people interested and getting new people hooked becomes a factor I spose.

Also, being able to follow trends and/or place ads alongside them isn't gonna hurt Google, is it? ;)

I agree, I use Gmail online all the time and will definitely not be signing up for twitterer as a result of this!! :evil:
