My intolerance of ads and heavily repeated programmes means it's been quite some time since I last watched a Freeview channel

You don't pay a TV licence to watch freeview. You pay because it's the rules, and to fund (mainly) the BBC.

I don't want more channels, I want less +1 channels (people have VCR's, HDD's and Sky+ etc) and some freeview channels in HD.

That last bit is coming - in fact it's already here if you have the kit and live in the right places. Freeview HD is scheduled for full coverage by 2012, when the last analogue signals are switched off.

Currently, it is BBC HD, ITV1 HD (when they can be bothered), with rumours of Channel 4/S4C and Five.

I'd be happy for Freeview to lose all the shopping channels to make some bandwidth for decent programming. There's too much dross on most of the available channels which could easily be cut out.
