Oil reserves are not all acounted for. Peak oil is about 20-40 years away.

That is what they want you to believe. What do you think the average voter would do if they found out it was yesterday and that prices were never going to be this cheap again? Once the prices started hurting there would be riots everywhere that would bring down governments. Hence push it off until the future and it becomes someone else's problem. The theory of Peak Oil is peak production. There will probably be enough oil for several hundred years but never this cheap or available. There has not been a significant oil find for more than a decade. Oil companies are depleting their reserves and are certainly not discovering enough to replace what they have extracted.

When someone says "they" it always sounds conspirital.

I think the estimate of 20-40 years isn't far off and I would err on the side of the 40. Now 20-40 years is the long term by most peoples economics, and over time deep sea oil extraction becomes ever cheaper.

The current reasons why oil prices are so high:
Demand side inflation
Speculative markets
OPEC and various other oil cartels
unstable countries
Costs of production
The market resolves itself in the energy sector since prices rise causes ventures into technology previously not cost effective.

Bought 3000 litres of oil last week... I'll be warm and toasty for a while now. That said, the tank is only half full!

Prices dropped around 50% after the peak in 2008 and, although they fluctuate by around 10c a litre for petrol/diesel each week, at the moment, they are relatively stable.

Regardless of whether we are about to run out or not, we need to look at alternatives now. It pollutes our world, it is a finite resource and it is getting more expensive, so we will need to change at some point. The sooner we can find a better alternative, the better.

I agree, if we do it now then we can transition with little disruption and at reduced cost. Once the panic sets in the costs will be incredible.
