They may be allowing them time to put their affairs in order as they both look like doing some gaol time. Plus sentencing might be waiting for reports. Though such officers should be sacked immediately on conviction.

I still think he at least should be denied bail - too much risk to his life if nothing else

The real risk to him will happen when he is sent inside though he will apply for rule 43 immediately and spend his time with the at risk lot.
