The money doesn't just have to be spent on tech. Libraries worked well enough with books in my day. I would also say that learning to research yourself is more beneficial than JFGI. Also think of how many books you can buy for the cost of a laptop, and how many years more than a laptop the book can be used. I'm not suggesting no internet, just that it isn't the be all and end all of education.

I totally agree Matt. Just, if they are going to provide computers for all, the library is the sensible place to do it - that or opening sponsored internet cafés on every corner...

Plus it's more efficient since the hours that they are used for education are concentrated in a 9am-5pm period and those laptops at home are going to be used for frivilous things so allocatively I would say it would be more efficient to use the money to fund school library computers. However I think the government are set on this obsession of involving ever more unwholesome computer "learning" which in my experience is excessively boring and is not personal enough.

Oh yeah sure, and what if they don't have a library near them, or it has two computers to cater for hundreds of students? Again I'm fairly lucky as my village still has its library, many others don't - which would involve a 10 mile trip into Truro. Students were only allowed to use school computers for up to an hour after school too.

Yes a book can be used for years, however it quickly becomes dated. I have textbooks from 2008 that are already out of date. Things change too quickly for a book to remain relevant for very long, the Internet however evolves.

If you have a child who requires a computer to get a good level of education (isnt that the schools job?) and you cannot afford one I've got a question; how is that anyone else's fault? I mean really, why should the taxpayer have to fund a scheme to pay for computers for those who cant afford them?

In the same way that the State subsidises school uniforms. If the school requires it (e.g. for homework) then we should help the disadvantaged. Even playing field and all that.

In a Barry Scott 'advertisement' type voice....
Cant afford a computer? Cant afford school uniforms? Need your rent paid for you? Well worry no more. You dont need to go without having a child or worrying about such things like clothing and housing it. Just come to the UK and we'll give you the lot! We'll even pay you to stay at home and do nothing.

Well I for one am glad the welfare state is there. I'll be unemployed come September, and if I don't manage to find something else then at least I'll be able to eat something courtesy of HMG and JSA. I think that's a good thing personally.

You are absolutely right it is. I was unemployed when I left Uni and claimed whatever is was then for two months. I dont disagree with welfare. What grates me is people chosing the welfare system as a way of life, a free house, support for their kids, an alternative to 'trying' in life. Now they're getting free computers on top of everything else. Nope. I just cannot agree with it.
