Well LED backlighting is gay (assuming it's a Samsung panel, which it probably is). The quality is the same, they're just slimmer. Yet more consumer/lifestyle pandering for those who care not about cost or quality, but just that their tech is unobtrusive. I defy anyone who actually enjoys movies to not be blown away by the IMAX sequences and in fact the whole thing in Blu-Ray. In fact they should do that in the shops. Watch Dark Knight and if you're not bothered, don't upgrade your TV

The PS3 is an alright BD player, but the upscaling isn't gonna be as good as a dedicated BD player, certainly not a recent one. As for DVD player upscaling, that's certainly not even gonna be as good as a PS3 unless you spent significant amounts of money on your player (which Joe Schmo won't have done).

I may be a geek, but it's not all I am. I also have "normal" friends who just like movies and still love the difference. But there certainly is no point if you can't see the difference. I didn't spend £1500 on audio for my car because I wanted to park in McDonalds and blow away the chavs, I did it because I love music. We all have finite incomes and we make (or should make) purchasing decision based on what's most important to us. I'm happy to buy cheaper clothes (and rarely) in order to be able to drive my car, for example.

Nope, it's a good TV, I think veato has the same one or one in the same range IIRC :)

I've often seen the PS3 described as a good BR player, and *I believe* that's what some of the firmware updates are about. There should be a fair bit of difference between a cheap player and a PS3, should there not? My player upscales to 1080p.

Talking to people less geeky than ourselves, they just don't really see much benefit either IME. I'm waiting on seeing/hearing about my mate's experience with TDK on his 46'' 1080p LED backlit TV...

LG by any chance?

I dont know what to say really. Its each to their own and I'm certainly not out to convince people they need BD. From my perspective though £100 for a 5-star rated player that improves the visuals of my current film collection (better than a PS3 too if a comparison is needed) AND allows me to add BD films if I fancy it AND plays AVCHD content from my camera too, is a bit of a bargain - especially as I didnt have a dedicated DVD player in the lounge as I was using the Xbox.

I understand for some the investment in a TV + player + audio is too much plus the increased cost in the films (although this is coming down), but if you have the TV already and in the market for a new player then I couldnt recommend the Sony BD player enough.
