Restaurants' policy of "turning tables" means that some diners are paying more than £1 a minute to eat a meal out.

For me, one of the pleasures of eating out is the conversation and company. Rushing this merely ruins the evening and hence I wouldn't go to a restaurant where this practice takes place. A meal with with friends can last 2-3 hours easily.

Same here. It ruins a night out.

If I book a table then its mine for as long as I want it.

If they tell me when I book that itys for X hrs then I will make a decision at that time as to weather I will go there

If they say when booking "there are two sittings, 7-30 and 9-30" then OK, otherwise not

Staff are paid by the hour - if you are sat there not eating for hours on end, you are just taking up room and costing them money. They're a business, not a doss-house.

I wonder what the sum is for a place like McD's or KFC.

Depends on the queue.

On a good day, I can spend about £4 and eat it in 2 minutes. If it's really busy, then you spend a lot longer being hungry and pushed about so I guess that's better value..?

Yes but at the same time, the longer we stay, the more we tend to spend. If we're there for say three hours, in that time, we will have eaten a starter, main, dessert, coffee/tea as well as large quantities of alcohol - this is much more than if we stay for only 60-90 mins, where we will typically only have two courses and maybe one glass of wine each.

We also tend to go out during the week (Mon-Thurs), when it's not so busy so there's usually a good few tables free.

If they're going to charge me five quid for a bowl of soup, I'm going to stay there as long as I flippin' well like.

Are you sure you don't vote Tory? Lol.

I expect they continue to buy drinks.

Yes but once you have finished the meal most of the staff can leave. It will be a matter of a few late coffees and paying. That can be done by the manager if you are the last. Or possibly one other. The kitchen staff can leave. Much of the restaurant will have been cleared and the last table could be left till the morning if necessary. So those costs will be minimal.

Went out last night – no table turnover

Anyway had the meal and then we sat and chatted and ordered 2 more bottles of wine. Finally left as it was a “school night” and all had to travel home
