Nice sentiment, fumbled in the implementation.

Whilst I can understand the frustration I think protectionism is the wrong route to go down.

I'm not sure you could call it protectionism given that UK lorries wil pay too.
But I agree there is a need to balance things. Foreign lorries do have an advantage at the moment.

I wonder if UK haulage firms that registered their fleets abroad will start to bring them back to this country.

Possibly. The protectionism such as it is is probably not in charging foreign hauliers to drive their vehicles in Britain, it's in giving a tax break to British haulage companies. However I don't know if that actually counts as protectionism in the international law sense of the term.

Agreed, charging some sort of 'road usage fee' is a reasonable thing to do. Ideally it would be based on how many miles they are going to do, but I suspect a flat fee is much easier to administer.

Why is it protectionism when we are, pretty much, levelling the playing field?

What I don't understand is why it does not come into force until 2015 :x

Why can't it be Jan 1st 2013 ?

We're artificially raising the cost for foreign lorries using British roads, that's a barrier to trade right there. By increasing the costs for foreign competitors (in a similar manner to import tariffs, for example), the British government is making British firms more competitive - ergo protectionism.

Plus they are probably paying road fuel duty as well.

Yes. With most things for me it is a case of out of sight out of mind. So once the notifications stopped there were no reminders for me. It was only when I was looking into signing up to Quidco that I remembered that ernie was a member and that if I got a referral from him that he could possibly earn from my joining up. So I contacted him. Memories are made up of bizarre linkages.

Or filling up before they get here where it's cheaper, then filling up again when they get back.
What's the range of a lorry on a full tank of fuel anyway?

It would be several hundred miles but they might still need a small top up, even just to get it back to the port. Nothing more expensive than a lorry out of commission because it ran out of fuel.
