A gunman has opened fire at a shopping mall near the city of Portland, Oregon, killing two people and himself.

One other person was seriously injured at the Clackamas Shopping Center and taken to hospital, Lt James Rhodes of Clackamas County Police said.

Officials say the gunman killed himself after the shooting spree. Police who arrived at the scene did not fire.

Early reports suggest that the shooter is a 20 year-old father of a pupil at the school.

BBC are currently reporting that the shooter was the son of one of the teachers at the school. He had already killed his father, then travelled to the school, walked into the infants class his mother was teaching and started shooting pretty indiscriminately. Reports say he's dead (shot himself allegedly), his mother is dead, and 20 of the class who just happened to be there are also dead.

I am genuinely, genuinely angry about this. How utterly stupid can that country be if they're willing to sacrifice classes full of infant children on the alter of gun ownership. How utterly barbaric and broken. And they have the temerity to lecture the rest of the world about freedom, democracy and civilisation. The sheer gall to hold themselves up as an example.

The faces of all twenty children should be shown on a big screen in both houses of their government every single day until they do something about the needless slaughter they are inflicting on the population they profess to serve and represent. And after all 20 faces have been shown, this clip should be shown. Every single day. And only then should they be allowed to get on with whatever else they feel they need to do.

Keeping hold of their guns IS more important to gun owners in the US than innocent people being killed. Shootings like this are just collateral damage.

Even discussion is considered a violation of their rights in the US. I suspect that within a few days the discussion will be over and they will be more concerned with what Lindsay Lohan is up to.

I really feel sorry for the man named by the press who is still alive, while the killer is actually dead. People can be stupid.

I'm inclined to agree with you (sadly) But I find myself wanting to quote someone I've just seen on twitter

'To all those people saying changing the gun laws in the US is too hard, the most appropriate response is this..'

Nothing that's needed is too hard. Nothing that's needed is impossible. You just have to want to do it enough. The question they have to ask is not 'how hard will it be to change our gun laws' it is 'how much do we want all our children to grow up safely'.

This post in The New Yorker magazine sums it up well

The people who have defended America's gun laws in the past are complicit in the murder of 20 children. It has happened too many times before for them to be able to say 'we didn't know this would happen'. Because everybody else damn well did.

There is something wrong with a nation that has the same ratio of guns to users as Canada yet has a death rate many times higher. I hope that they finally see sense. Shame so few actually realise that the constitution allows guns within a well organised Militia.
