That last comment kinda sums up my feelings. It was always going to be inevitable that someone did this though, no real shock there sadly.

I agree. I am thinking of what I could use it for, and guns do not even figure in my thoughts. My ideas are for making spare parts for games, parts for boxes. Basically things that I can use around the home. Apparently the designs have a space to put 1 oz of metal to comply with the law on metal detectors. Though that does mean that those unwilling to comply with the law will simply not put the metal in. I suspect that any attempts to ban 3D printers will be covered by the right to bear arms amendment.

Allegedly, the first one blew up, when they test fired it on 3rd May, using a length of string to pull the trigger. After a bit of reworking, the second test firing was successful. I'm guessing, that it is a one-shot wonder, you wouldn't be able to shoot multiple times, because the plastic would just melt and either block the barrel or make it unusably inaccurate. That said, you could commit a crime, then melt it down and produce kids toys from the plastic, no evidence... A bit like the old Rohald Dahl story, where the woman kills her husband with a frozen leg of lamb, then serves it to the police that come to investigate the crime. Reality aping art...

Pretty much any manufacturing process can be used to make weapons. There is nothing stopping you making a simple gun with tools and materials available in B&Q. So I am not surprised at all by this. I am rather surprised that the plastic used can withstand the firing, though I expect the lifespan of such a weapon to be fairly short. Mind you, 3D printers destined for consumers seem limited to plastic, so this should restrict the abilities of the weapon produced. When cheap 3D printers start working with metal, then I would expect more durable weapons to be available.

I think that it has such a limited life might be a saving grace. You might need to carry a separate barrel for each round you intend to fire, and then what I suspect is that they will develop multi barrelled pistols like a Derringer. Four rounds and four barrels.

You need to see the rest of them. While the creation of these guns does seem to be an inevitable development it does not mean that it is right.
