Other than to say that's an absolute disgrace, words are failing me at the moment.

America - home of the free ?

Don't make me laugh.

Reminds me more of China or North Korea.

"Necessity is the plea for every infringement of human freedom. It is the argument of tyrants; it is the creed of slaves." (William Pitt)

This is the same as what our glorious government intended. Not details of content, but a list of all your calls and contacts and how long you talked. It builds a database of connections. So in theory you could be arrested under terrorist charges because someone you know has direct contact with an unknown terrorist.

Larry Page, Mark Zuckerberg speak out on PRISM, say they never heard of it

http://www.techradar.com/news/internet/ ... am-1157387

I won't be surprised if those two look very silly in the near future :(

GCHQ Prism spying claims: Agency to report 'shortly'

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-22824379
Quote:
Richard Aldrich, a professor of international security at the University of Warwick, said he expected Mr Cameron to say "rather as President Obama has said, that you can't have your cake and eat it - you can't have 100% privacy and 100% security".

"What they're not going to say is, actually, we're very rapidly accelerating to a point where we're going to be in a transparent society," he told Today.

"Privacy is effectively a 20th century concept like the steam engine."

Assuming you haven't been taken out of context there, fcuk you. I seem to recall Mr Cameron's emails being kept from the public recently when we were trying to get to the bottom of his exact relationship with a bunch of phone tappers! And allegedly that's coming back round again...

Quote:
Meanwhile, the BBC has learned that Twitter was invited to join the Prism programme last year but rejected the approach from US authorities.

That could be the best decision Twitter's made in a long time.

I was listening to Radio 4 about Prism today and it would seem that it is likely that none of the companies would have known what it was called. Though they might have given up some information.

Apparently, the PRISM logo was designed using a photo taken by TV presenter Adam Hart Davies.

Still not enough to stop the NSA doing a six degrees of Kevin Bacon on him.

Hague: Law-abiding Britons have nothing to fear from GCHQ

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-22832263

Quote:
"The net effect is that if you are a law-abiding citizen of this country going about your business and personal life, you have nothing to fear about the British state or intelligence agencies listening to the content of your phone calls or anything like that.

"Indeed you will never be aware of all the things that these agencies are doing to stop your identity being stolen or to stop a terrorist blowing you up tomorrow."

First of all, I know I shouldn't be surprised by the 'law-abiding citizen' bit, but it does show how laughably tragic this all is.

Secondly, 'OOOH, scare me some more with your stories!' Cnut.

EDIT - love the bit about the agent with the laptop; no doubt that's totally secure!

The fact is that governments do each others dirty work. That way they can deny it and be truthful. Also the fact that you Are not allowed to even acknowledge FISA requests is another thing as well.

Well yes, it's a nice little cosy club. You aren't allowed to surveil your own population, but apparently it's OK to let a 'friendly' power surveil your population and then hand the data they find over to you. Of course if they scratch your back, you scratch theirs. Whether they've been collecting data on the mass of communications or only select ones, it's this that is the real scandal. They've been intentionally circumventing the laws they are supposed to be upholding and protecting.

It was so much easier during the cold war when our enemies were called Boris and spoke funny.

The fact is that 99% (if not even higher percentage) of us are not a threat to anyone. Yet we are caught up in the process to track down those few hundred dodgy individuals who are a real threat to the state.

Yes I was thinking of him when I wrote that. Only Cameron would consider him an enemy of the government! :)
