Apparently it’s complicated: http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/thereporters ... cause.htmlI thought it was cold because it is winter, and it’s meant to be cold.

Climate Change I was wondering whether the earth had shifted slightly on its North/South axis so that the Northern hemisphere is now nearer the "top" as it were and the southern hemisphere nearer where the equator was - that could explain why we are cold yet Australia is suffering a huge heatwave.

In the case of the current weather, isn't it simpler than that? We're on the same latitude as Scandanavia, so in theory we should have just as harsh winters as they do. Generally, we don't because we're first in line for the atlantic stream of warmer water and therefore air which they don't benefit from. Currently, there's a front which is blocking that warmer atmosphere and is effectively 'sucking' the air across the North Sea from Mainland Europe and Russia.
As a result, colder temperatures and more snow. If not for the atlantic stream, this is the winter we'd get every year.

Yes, it is true, it is just the Gulf Stream that stops us having seasons like Scandinavia and Canada and the Gulf Stream is always on the move.

It's not right - cold weather in winter. How dare the planet have a tilted axis! I blame Gordon Brown. [/sarcasm]

Yes but how does that explain the excessive heatwave Australia is suffering from or the unprecidented cold spell North America is currently having?

It's Australia's summer, and it's winter in North America. This happens, from time to time. I recall a friend showing pictures of ice floes in the Hudson about 6 years ago. Is it really 'unprecedented'? Has it never been this cold/warm before, really?

It used to get so cold that the Thames would freeze.

Indeed. People used to mark out tennis courts on the ice and practise there over the winter.
