Batman: Arkham Asylum won the best game of 2009 at the Videogame BAFTA awards in London this month.

Eidos/Rocksteady's sublime game based on the dark knight scooped two Video Games Awards and Uncharted 2 took four, and Nintendo's creative powerhouse Shigeru Miyamoto was honoured with an Academy Fellowship.

Batman: Arkham Asylum was nominated for eight of the 13 awards and along with Best Game took the BAFTA for Gameplay, which anybody who has played the game will no doubt agree was fully deserved.

Star-studded ceremony

Sony's superb Uncharted 2 was up for ten awards and won Story, Use of Audio, Action and Original Score. LittleBigPlanet for PSP won the best Handheld, Flower won Artistic Achievement, Wii Sports Resort Family won Social Game And Family, and Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 took the GAME Award of 2009, perhaps the most important of the lot, as that one is voted for by the public.

The ceremony was hosted by comedian Dara Ó Brien, who was at least aware of who Shigeru Miyamoto was, with Nintendo's creative chief honoured with the Academy Fellowship.

The full list of winners is as follows:

Action Game: Uncharted 2
Family & Social Game: Wii Sports Resort
Use of Online: FIFA 10
Artistic Achievement: Flower
Best Game: Batman: Arkham Asylum
Gameplay: Batman: Arkham Asylum
Handheld: LBP PSP
Multiplayer: Left 4 Dead 2
Original Score: Uncharted 2
Sports: FIFA 10
Story: Uncharted 2
Strategy: Empire: Total War
Use of Audio: Uncharted 2
BAFTA Ones To Watch Award (presented by David Braben): Shrunk! by The Butterflyers
GAME Award of 2009 (voted for by the public): Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. Second place was Assassin's Creed 2, and Uncharted 2 took third.
Academy Fellow: Shigeru Miyamoto

Can't disagree with the Batman and Uncharted awards IME. Thoughts?

If one is diving so close to the limits that +/- 1% will make a difference then the error has already been made.

I haven't played PC games for years, but Batman was great on the PS3 (Comic book geekiness not required ;) ), and Uncharted 2 is nearly worth buying one for*

* The first Uncharted is a top game too :D

Alan Titchmarsh and team discuss video games. Well. you know, the violent ones. Jump to around the 23.15 mark

I think it's priceless the way the two usual guests know the audience well enough to look right at them and wait for their applause...

That woman was annoying. At least her lack of knowledge about the MW scene she mentioned reduced her credibility. The 'bad guy' should have jumped on that and torn a few strips.

Julie Peasgood, actress and sex expert. Not sure if the two are related ;)

I noticed nobody had any real comeback on the issues around parenting...

Good point. I wouldn't mind seeing a proper debate covering this subject rather than a couple of minutes of some magazine type chat show of people probably more interested in boosting sales or viewing of their books or newspaper columns.

+1, far as I can tell, the most sensible look at games on TV in recent months has actually been from Charlie Brooker :)

I hope the talk of Gamesmaster making a comeback is correct - that oughta p1ss a few people off

Arkham Asylum was simply an awesome game and it was worthy of those awards.

I think it was, as far as I can tell it's still selling well now, especially with the DLC being pretty high quality for the most part

I did think 'some loon in a suit' when I first saw it, but that's kinda who the character is

Regarding Fathers', do you reckon a politician has ever uttered the line, 'Can you tell me how a man dressed as a bat can steal my press?'
