A third of parents cannot afford family summer holiday

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/finance/pers ... liday.html

Quote:
The survey of parents with children aged 4 to 18 showed the true extent of the financial burden of school holidays this summer, resulting in cutbacks on trips to theme parks, the cinema, and the seaside.
A total of 38 per cent of those with children at school said they will end up in debt by the time the new school term begins, according to the statistics published by charity Elizabeth Finn Care.

I think my girlfriend has been on holiday with the kids twice (they are now 18 and 16) in their lives (and never outside the state). They usually go to a camp, although the youngest did go on a church sponsored holiday to Corisca 2 years ago.

I'm sorry but a holiday (as in going away overseas etc) is not a right, its a luxury

It's why I didn't do it this year, couldn't afford it simply

Barring trips to france, where accomodation and food are provided, I haven't been abroad since 2004.

Make that 1981 for me.

Apart from a paid-for week in York a year ago, we haven't been able to afford holidays for years. It's just lucky we have generous friends and parents who live in nice places with spare bedrooms.

We tend to go away each year but we don't smoke/drink. I buy about 5-6 games/dvds/cds a year etc. Just prioritising.

As hifidelity said its a luxury and not a right, to me that extends to everything beyond food, shelter and healthcare.

We go away every year but that's because the GF's family live in Europe. Free bed and board only makes it feasible really.

Mind you I didn't leave the UK until I was 21 so I'm making up for it.

Even if I wanted to go abroad (and there isn't much drive there), all my mates are broke

I do the same, I go and stay with people and rarely stay in a hotel. It makes it much more affordable. Plus I usually pay for the flights with Airmiles so that makes it easier as well.

Aye, I'd really like to go and catch up with a load of mates who ended up in Oz. Not sure when that will happen.

Bugger, I never remember, we have an open ended invitaiton to use our Italian mate's flat in the centre of Rome.

Really should get around to it.

I've been abroad once in my life, and that was this year (unless you want to count a visit to Dublin two years ago).

All of my holidays have been spent in this country, mainly Cornwall and Devon.
After going to Belgium for a weekend, I can't understand why one might want to holiday abroad, it was fairly stressful.
