Do you think that this is maybe a symptom of an Apple without Jobs? Add this to the DNS flaw they took ages to patch, the SATA150 limitation on the new 13" and 15" macbook pro's and the unresponsive trackpads. The prices are better, but they've cut corners where they probably shouldn't have. Just seems a bit directionless.

I'd say they're anything but lacking in direction - new iPhone, new iPhone OS, new Macs and a new Mac OS all coming out around the same time.

The latest "problems" are hardly symptoms of a deeper malaise. Even with Jobs at the helm, Apple has taken its sweet time to address problems in the past - sometimes outright denying they exist before quietly addressing the issue. I'd put a lot of the latest slips down to Snow Leopard, which I think Apple is absolutely focused on getting right as it is the fundamental future of the company.

In other words, they've been busy polishing the family silver and have left some corners to get dusty. Now they're starting to clean up the rest of the house, starting with the Java fix.

I’d rather they supported RAW in one of my cameras, to be honest. That‘s been outstanding for more than 6 months.

Yes, that's an absolutely crucial fix they must focus on post-haste.

 I saw Liam's tweet and it took about a half a second of looking at the URL to see he had the wrong one :D

That's what comes from working on international projects and websites all day long, you can spot an ISO316-2 code a mile off 8-)

That's good to know, now if they'd only send a couple of the new mbp's up my way I'll hand over the money.

Can you not use the online store?

Personally, I'd hold out - if you can - just for a week or so to see if any other "issues" appear with the MBPs. I haven't read of any, but I'm not in the market for one at the moment so haven't really been paying attention. Me, I'm waiting for iPhone OS 3!

I can, but I don't want to - involves using the postal service to ferry forms of ID and signed agreements back and fore - buying on finance you see.

A ha, that makes perfect sense. Well, the enforced wait will give you all that time to build your anticipation - and we await your images of the MBP's unpacking.

Perhaps Apple are too small a company to handle it all? In the last decade they have taken on many, many more projects than they have before, and yes their profits are going up, but I wonder if they've gotten to a point where they are being pulled by two very demanding products...
Leopard suffered, IMO, because of the iPhone, it got punted back further than we expected, and I think that Snow Leopard has been the same, if they had more people working on it we could have seen SL released at WWDC.
In the last decade we've seen Apple bring out various new lines of Mac hardware, switching from PPC to Intel
They've brought us however many variations and generations of the iPod family
We've had five OS X releases and almost three iPhone OS releases (in the space if a couple of years)
Apple have introduced the iTunes store, introduced movies and TV into than and now applications too

They've been very busy brining out new products, they've let things slide, as you said. They know people thrive on new features, people seem un-enthused by the idea of SL because it allegedly doesn't give anything to the end user (Tiger had spotlight and expose, Leopard had Time Machine, new Doc, tacks...).

As Dave said, the work had been done for them, Java 6 is a nice touch, but the security patch could have been applied months ago and few people would have cared that they didn't get Java 6 too, but a lot more people would have been safer...

I think you're right, in a sense, when you say they are too small a company to "do it all" as inevitably there's going to be an opportunity cost involved when you focus your energies on one area. Then again, size isn't everything - Microsoft managed to release Vista despite Redmond's cast of hundreds of thousands.

In the bad old days Apple had the worst possible policy of regularly introducing new products - new Mac models, new operating systems, ancillary hardware - then not backing them up and leaving them to wither. The result was a confused product line and a drain on company resources. I hope Snow Leopard shows a new ethos at the company where it feels comfortable stepping back, taking a breath and saying: "No more new features till we get the current ones perfect." I think they should apply that logic to all their products, from the iPod Shuffle to the Mac Pro.

Yes, the Java fix was a joke in the length of time it took to introduce it to end users. But are we getting in a huff over nothing - did anyone actually suffer from this thing not being patched?

Still quite surprised that Gav is buying Apple, given the volumes of criticism he’s poured on the hardware in the past. What caused the change of mind?

Unless he's actually on holiday and someone has hijacked his account here!

I'm sure the Apple flock will give him a warm welcome. I wonder if we'll see him over at t'other place asking for advice once his MBP makes an appearance?

I don’t think he’s ever been unwelcome - but sure, he’ll be heartily greeted and will get the same level of help and advice that anyone asking a sensible Mac question can would get.

Windows 7!

Oh, and the new prices and 7 hour battery life!

I stopped hating them a while ago, it simmered down to a begruding tolerance but Windows 7 was the end.
