Other half has bought a Pie in a Tin. I am not sure what to make of this idea as it seems to be some ind of travesty.

Believe it or not, they can be really very good. Pretty much restaurant quality although I know they don't sound it!

You usually take the lid off and then bake it in the tin. The puff pastry crust goes crispy and they're usually full of filling - unlike a lot of ready made pies.

I wish I could make really good puff pastry. It's one of my biggest culinary failings. I failed so hard so often I've now given up :(

Don't worry about it. Puff pastry sucks arse compared to short crust anyway (IMO).

Packeted puff pastry is quite good these days anyway. ;)

Puff pastry is a Quisling that rightly deserves to be denounced and reviled by every dutiful man of sound mind and faculty. It is a simulacrum, a malodorous imitation, a pestilential malformation, a distorted nefarious twisting of that most noble of dishes the pie. It preys upon the ignorant and weak-witted, the deprived and the uneducated whose fortitude or lack thereof cannot possibly overcome the beguilement of the promise of heart-warming, order-restoring alimentary encasement. It is a most accursed abomination perpetrated by that most baneful and malefic of purveyors of foodstuffs, Fray Bentos.

May he who speaks of puff pastry with reverence be eternally condemned, most bitterly scorned and cast out to take his rightful place in the fiery chasm alongside the overly-loud phone-talker and the cinema-latecomer, period drama creators, tailgaters, OS fanbois, cous-cous eaters and advertising consultants.

Glory be to the PIE!

But.. but.. it's crunchy and delicious

I don't really like shortcrust. I use it because it's easy to make, but I always make it as thin as possible to minimise the stodgy unpleasantness - and I much prefer mine to any other I've had :(

Pastry was invented to keep dirt off the filling. You weren't even meant to eat it; unless you were super-hungry you'd feed it to the dogs or peasants. Sometimes it wasn't edible at all, containing stuff more like cement. Shortcrust shows little evidence of evolving as far as I can see

Same goes for the batter on fish.

People who eschew pies with puff pastry are simply denying themselves the opportunity of more pie, and should be sectioned.

Pie made with puff pastry has forgotten the face of the one true Pie and is to be treated as quiche
