Yes, banks are [LIFTED], but if the Greek government had bothered to enforce tax collection things might be different.

That is definitely a factor, but tax evasion is ingrained in Greece. Higher collection of taxes is crucial but I have seen would be tax collectors protesting. There isn't the money to pay them to chase the taxes.

We should learn from that though, we have getting on for £150billion in unpaid taxes that needs collecting, that doesn't include any of the avoided taxes.

It would come in handy right about now.

Yes the issues with accountancy do need addressing. There needs to be separation of advisory from audit work. For most big companies they actually just break even on an audit. The real money is in consultancy and tax advice. If they advice a company to structure in X way to boost profits and reduce debts then the auditors are not going to question a decision made by someone higher ranking than they are. Auditing is the bread and butter work and the accounting stars do not have to do that. There is a big conflict of interest from such arrangements. It was why Arthur Anderson collapsed as a result of Enron.

The problem is that governments have been captured by the financials. The main parties get so much funding from them that the parties are unlikely to but the hand that feeds them. So we also need party funding reform. So that we can actually get politicians who will actually reform the banking system. Until then hold on for dear life and watch the UK economy go down the pan to save the banks.
