Look, I think I've made it clear I'm no Cameron fan but this whole story is utterly trivial and irrelevant. I don't care if he tips waitresses or not. I don't give a damn what sort of coffee he drinks. It. Doesn't. Matter. Nor, in fact, does it matter whether he's back in the country or not. What's he, realistically, going to do? Is he going to don riot gear and hand out some prime ministerial justice on the streets of London? No. He's going to make a public statement and go to a few meetings. Well, excuse me, but I don't think that's going to make a massive and immediate difference to the situation, do you?

If there's one thing I can abide less than politicians showing up in an extreme situation and making no actual contribution beyond 'being seen to do something', it's people complaining that politicians aren't showing up in an extreme situation and making no actual contribution beyond 'being seen to do something'.

He's got a sodding phone. If someone needs to speak to him, or he needs to speak to someone, it can still happen. What difference has him being in the country actually made?

Jon

+1 to that.

I've often thought that in these situations. He has email, a mobile phone, he probably has a mobile video conferencing suite that would be the envy of most offices available 24-7.

He really doesn't even need to be in the country to make a public statement.

Let him play golf and take meetings on the phone. TBH it would probably allow him to make clearer and more thought-out decisions.

Also he would have delegated normal provision no matter what. As long as he can be contacted and given the relevant information, he can be anywhere. That said it is all perception.

He should be back. What he can do is go and speak to those affected.

I know that really makes not much practical difference but when there is trouble in a country many of those affected would appreciate feeling as though the leader of that country actually gives a crap.

Which he doesn't. Patently.

jonbwfc I was behind her in a queue today - but I wouldn't describe it as 'bushy'.

How do you know? Has he told you? He might give a crap ( I'd doubt it beyond will I lose votes but he just might)

I do think that actually wandering around the areas affected immediately is not necessary. It also distracts police and the authorities from more important tasks. If he had returned a day or so ago then met with the head of the Met, re what the Police needed that would have been much better. Though we do not know whether that had already been delegated to someone to deal with and had been dealt with. A simple statement on day one stating that he was being kept abreast of matters and that he had authorised additional support for the police would have covered the matter. If he named someone who was acting as coordinator while he is away would have closed the matter. Even so some would expect him to return regardless.
