I suspect that BMW will be very keen to furiously refute the idea that it's cars are likely to break down sooner if they are driven at about 20 mph for extended periods of time.

I've got the same engine in my car, 20mph is less that 2000 revs in 2nd or 3rd. That BMW also has a gear indicator to tell you what gear to be in. Less than 18-20mph is 2nd, 3rd kicks in at around 20 mph or so. It wouldn't matter what car you've got, you'd never be above 3rd gear if you're doing 20 mph or 30 mph. Keep changing up & down the gears to get to 4th puts more wear & tear on the gearbox, clutch & engine than driving at a slower speed and keeping it to 3rd gear.
In fact when I was doing my advanced driver training we were taught it was best to stay in 3rd up to 50mph.
