I think the point is some Apple fans love Apple things so much they are willing to queue for hours to be one of the first people in the country to get one. The majority of us are not bothered and are happy to wait. Apple do not force them to queue but because they do it is good free PR as Jon said. This shouldn't be a tit for tat over whether you have queued up for something or not.

For the record the only time I have ever queued up for something at stupid o'clock was when the Wham Final concert tickets went on sale in the 80's. I was in the pub until closing with friends and we killed some time and arrived at Wembley at 3am. I remember it being a great atmosphere and a fun adventure. Feel free to make funny comments lol.

http://www.loopinsight.com/2012/08/16/apple-boss-tries-to-gut-retail-operation/

Short version - Apple hired the ex head of Dixons to run their retail operation. Everyone in the UK thought 'well, that can only go well'.
Bloke's first major act was to institute major staff reductions across all retail divisions, insisting the retail operation could run 'leaner' I.e. he set about reducing costs by removing staff. Other high ups at Apple seemed to realise

A) this would cause customer service instore to tank
B) Apple has £100billion in the bank, is making money hand over fist and it's reputation is worth more than this bloke would save.

Internal memo goes round saying all cuts have been cancelled. Bloke is now suddenly not quite so visible.

Expect bloke, in a few months, to announce something like he was missing the UK too much, and to make a swift exit with the board's collective boot prints on his arse.

Did anyone expect hiring the head of Dixons to be a good thing for Apple?
