Been there, tried that. Often there's too many people in the vestibules already, and they move you on if you block an aisle...

Now here's a man that knows. I regularly travel via FGW between Cornwall and London, Cardiff and London and Cornwall and Cardiff. The service from FGW is that terrible I try and do part of the journey via CrossCountry services wherever humanly possible.

Which part of "my own limited experiences" did you not understand?

If one is diving so close to the limits that +/- 1% will make a difference then the error has already been made.

In my experience (First Capital Connect from Peterborough to London) First can run trains on time but I've never had a go in the rush hour. On the other hand, the fleet of trains they operate on the line hasn't, as far as I can tell, seen much improvement or upgrade since the service was run by WAGN and that's going on for a decade ago so they don't appear to be ones for making investments in the rolling stock. The trains aren't usually that clean inside either.
I never had any serious issues with Virgin Trains but I only used them as connecting services as it's the other side of the country. I liked the extra legroom on their trains relative to some of the old GNER east cost mainline trains but the east coast has much newer trains now and the difference has vanished plus the seats and aisles appear to be wider on the East Coast trains.

They're the same trains, the carriages have been refurbished to modern standards. There's nothing wrong with them now except the slam doors that you have to open by eaning through the window.
