Everyone seems to be drawing the comparison with Iraq, where we went overboard in an unjustified attack (unjustified in terms of the stated reasons for it anyway).

That's fine for now. But when the screaming finally stops, we will end up drawing parallels with Rwanda instead. Where we did nothing, and then nothing, and then nothing, and then half a million were dead.

There's just been an interesting bit about Syria on The One Show believe it or not, just at the start after talking to fat tongue Jamie... A quick 'do you think we should go to war?' around Catterick, then they got John Simpson in for a brief chat. It's worth iPlayering for 10 minutes :)

They would be less interested. Though the problem is that now that Syria has decided to use chemical weapons against the population and their links to Hamas means that if Syria does collapse these weapons could be used against Israel to start with, then any other country that might be perceived as a threat.

My concern here is that this could be a trigger for something bigger. A stepping stone to a larger conflict in the area. Are what we are seeing a result of a despot railing against his population, or machinations by others to inflame an already unstable situation?

I hope that when the decision is made to take action that far reaching questions are asked and answered.

This is it - it's more about vested interests than it is his use of chemical weapons. I mean nobody did much when he was killing thousands with more 'conventional' weapons.

Miliband was already angry after a government source used expletives overnight to criticise Miliband. A government source told the Times on Wednesday night: "No 10 and the Foreign Office think Miliband is a [LIFTED] [LIFTED] and a copper-bottomed [LIFTED]."

There definitely needs to be a no fly zone imposed.

+1

No mention of the fact some rebels were caught by the Turkish authorities trying to get Sarin into Syria.

No way should we get involved here - whole thing stinks of a put-up-job by the rebels to get the West to come into the conflict on their side as they are loosing the war to the regime.

One minute we are fighting against Al Qaeda (in Afghanistan) and the next we are trying to arm them in Syria :?

When Miliband made it clear in the call he would not support the government motion without more conditions, an exasperated Cameron accused him of "letting down America" and "siding with [Sergei] Lavrov", the Russian foreign minister, and an ally of Assad.

That really wouldn't surprise me, but it's obviously been 'sources' week.

Over here the news is reporting that the rebels might be responsible and Assad wants to deliver proof next week.
