In the real world, given the size of the internet, if something has been removed from the major search engines, it pretty much has been removed from the internet. What do you think the chances of finding some specific thing on the web these days without using a search engine?

Of course one could use another search engine - how many are there out there as in theory you would need to write to all of them

The problem isn't google. It's the websites that host the information.

True but its google have been lumped with this

so for example

- Politician X get convited for doing a hit and run in his car and its reported on the BBC web site
- Politician X gets google to remove a link to the BBC web site
- Google Comply
- If I seach google for the story nothing comes back
- If I search the BBC web site directly then the story does come back

...and more people want links removed

If I was a search engine that had no presence in the EU (and so cant be prosecuted) I might start a marketing campaign saying that I had links without censorship

He can't decide if he'd like to be forgotten or not ;)

Christ, imagine the fun Tony could have with this ruling...

Does the right to be forgotten trump the right to be remembered?

Google will help you disappear from the web

They've basically been forced into this so they might as well try and control the story now.

The EU will collectively have to backpeddle from this; inevitably someone will complain on public information or journalistic grounds, or that their website is unduly affected and that they have a right to free speech etc. Which would all be true. If nothing else, 'mistakes' will happen so often at either end of the spectrum that it'll become a farce within months.

The law only covers out-dated information or non-relevant. If it is in the public interest, Google can give that as grounds to reject the take down request.

It is mainly for expired financial information or expired convictions - the example being the Spaniard, who was declared bankrupt in 1996 and had his house repossessed, legally finance companies can't use that against him, as the information 'expired' over a decade ago, but because it is easy to find, it is affecting his ability to get credit now.

The EU wants to take the FAIL global
http://www.techradar.com/news/internet/ ... oo-1274595

If that's how stupid they are over a search engine, forgive me for not trusting them with global trade deals.
