New iMacs have been revealed. The lack of Blu-Ray is in my opinion very disappointing in what is an otherwise excellent update, particularly as the iMacs do not appear to have a video input to allow connection of an external player of any sort Sadly my next PC will not be an iMac because of this.

The new iMacs are very, very tempting. Someone hold me back.

Yes the 27" screens really appeal to me.

Cam either of them do 1080p? If not, I think you can assume BluRay playback was never on the table. Jon

They certainly have the resolution for it.

If they can't, then they're outdated piles of sh!te! Even my previous-generation sub £200 budget PC is capable of 1080p, although I have very little material in that format.

Well Big_D's iMac can. Not sure if it's 1, 2 or more generations back.

The 27" iMac does support video in via MiniDisplay Port, as was mentioned on the link you gave.

I will not be buying one yet but what is the upgrade cycle for iMacs? Is it around this time of year each year? Thanks in advance.

To be honest I'd only looked closely at the 21.5" iMac specification as the 27" is a bit too big for where it would go (the 24" was borderline but worth squeezing in for the better display compared to a 20" iMac) Also the 21.5" display is the ideal resolution for Blu-Ray, wheras the 27" iMac will need to upscale the content to fill the screen, potentially reducing the picture quality.

I am considering two 27" iMacs on my desk but I doubt that I will have space for them. One will double as a TV with a TV decoder dongle and the other will be my main machine. Though with a bit of juggling it could be possible. Though I am not looking just yet. I need to clear a loan first.

Considering the smaller display IS 1080p... Heck, I've been playing 1080p video on my old 24" iMac for 3 years - but it was all streamed 1080p, not Blu-Ray. I won't be getting into Bluray, I have over 1,000 DVDs and won't be rebuilding the collection. I'll be using the DVDs as they are and moving to streaming or whatever comes in the future, but I can't see me investing heavily in another format. The 27" looks really nice. The Core i5 one is also reasonably priced... Very tempting. Just need to see what the house move does to my finances...

Or, you could just live with a black border and leave the 1080p image non-scaled. Not the end of the world, IMHO.

I feel the same. Having a few hundred DVD's it becomes harder to decide which way to go. I will hold off till BluRay is substantially cheaper. That does not mean I will use BluRay in future.

I could, but the video window would be 20.25" in size, smaller than the 21.5" iMac. The 27" core i5 version is tempting though, I just need more space.
