There are cars on the market today that don't even let you look at a dip stick. The oil level is dealership business, and don't you forget it.
The more modern cars go down this route, the more the idea of building my own Ford Pop/32' Ford/Moggy Minor hotrod appeals.

The other differtence is that cars generally get an annual service by a professional - how many people take their PC in for an annula service - of both H/W and S/W
