Is there any fuel saving by not sitting in traffic or having to detour because there are less accidents?

If one is diving so close to the limits that +/- 1% will make a difference then the error has already been made.

Doubt it. I find it annoying and distracting when people have their lights on in the day. I doubt it'll reduce the crash rate.

I don't think it's necessary and with the number of miles I do it'll just irritate me, especially in the summer when my drive is entirely in the daylight. Mostly due to the number of people who have inappropriate bulbs/badly aligned headlights and dazzle the heck out of me from either the back or front. Fortunately my car won't be one of them and this would actively discourage me from buying a new car.

As a motorcyclist I have been using lights since I started so that I would be more visible. With cars being forced to have them on bikes will again fade into the background and once again it will be bikers that will be killed

Just because some people are too stupid to know when to turn on / off their lights is not a reason to make them compulsory.

+1

I don't mind cars being more visible but if it reduces daytime visibility of bikes, something needs to be done. At the moment, I notice bikes quite quickly because of their headlights. Having said that, I wo der
what the rates of bike accidents are since DRLs came into force in European countries.

Personally, I was planning on retrofitting DRLs in some way, regardless of the planned legislation. My car's headlights already come on when I go over 80mph (typically when overtaking) and stay on for a while. It also automatically comes on in dim conditions. Regardless of vehicle I will always turn on the headlights when it is raining or even if it is a dark/dim day.

Mine do that as well.

Most BMWs, Mercedes and other top brands have automatic lights and it is an option on Audi, VW, Ford and Opel, among others.

VW Golf GTI.

Came as standard. Though TBH in retrospect I'd expect in on German vehicles.

Agreed

Seems a bit silly to me.

Just introduce a £1000 automatic fine for not using lights appropriately.

I think this is a case of the EU (and governments in general) want to be seen to improve safety without actually caring if safety is really improved.

In the countries where it has been implemented, they have allegedly seen a reduction in car accidents.

The only drawback with the scheme is as hifi and I have mentioned, increased risk for motorcyclists...

Perhaps bikes could have a slight blue tint to their headlights? That would make it possible to distinguish them at night also.

Bikes have lights that are aimed at your mirror, rather than the road as with cars. Well except Audis, I find the recent models very dazzling compared to almost every other vehicle out there.

There is a safety concern about motorcycle riders. They have had to use daylight running lights for years on the continent and it is strongly recommended in the UK. It certainly makes them more visible, but there are concerns, if cars also run daylight running lights, motorbikes will become less visible again...

Yes but if a motorist cannot see a headlight then he/she should be banned for any fatality that they cause. If there was a mandatory 10 year ban for a motorcycle fatality the motorists would pay a lot more attention. It has been shown in the past that drivers do not care if they think that they can get away with it. The case last month of road rage against the copper on the bicycle happens all the time except it is rarely a copper that is run off the road.

You mean like the chavs that drive round with blue-tinted (or worse, just blue) headlights? The problem, IIRC, as you go towards the blue end of the spectrum is that the throw of the light is reduced, so close visibility is very good but distant is poor.
