Here, in Germany, we also have the "Ordnungsamt", which work with the police. They do the work of meter maids and also patrol city centres, parks etc. and stop people for minor offences, like riding a bike in pedestrian zone, calling in tow trucks for illegally parked cars, stopping people drinking on the street or lighting BBQs in areas where it is prohibited or dangerous.

If I want to have my barbecue on the garage forecourt I should be allowed to. I might have bought it in the garage and want to test that it works, before I have left the premises. ;)

I saw a documentary, where they stopped a bunch of teenagers having a BBQ under a historic wooden bridge in the English Garden in Munich!

They hadn't even thought about the dangers of sparks from the grill setting the dry wood of the bridge on fire...

I remember on our last day of school we all went down the beach. It was raining, but there weren't exactly many options for us at the time.

We used an intricate setup of wind breakers and towels to shield the BBQ from the rain and had a successful BBQ in the soaking wet. 8-)

The council staff who patrol up and down the promenade did stop and ask us what we were doing but left us to it - probably thinking we were mad - when we told them.
