I bought a BR capable drive, after my DVD writer died last month.

I had no plans to buy any BR movies, but the Band of Brothers box set was going for £20. I love the series, and already had it on DVD but a borrower returned it with two discs missing! I don't lend out my films anymore.

Anyway, getting back to my point. BR is nice for super detailed films and such but, in places, the extra clarity made some scenes in BoB look almost unfinished. With that in mind I do wonder about these remastered films, and the Alien screenies don't look all that special - almost looks like the DVD stills have been degraded to show a greater contrast between the two formats.

The Alien screenies are much smaller than the 1920x1080 they should be on the disc. The DVD print will obviously degrade something chronic if upscaled to that size. Alien and Aliens are important films - and making mistakes on the BluRay transfer will be a big problem for the release. I’m glad to see that James Cameron was involved in the BluRay mastering. Even if his attentions are elsewhere now, I feel that his involvement signifies that his demanding nature will ensure a decent version.

I have a sizeable DVD collection of several hundred DVD's and I have not considered BD yet. I might once I get a PS3. Until then I can wait.

And does that person appreciate the sheer significance of the time spent there? ;)
