You can never help wondering in this day and age

I'll laugh my balls off if MS are dumb enough for always on and/or second-hand blocking... I live close to the shipyard that built the Titanic, maybe we could build another giant FAILboat for 'em ;)

They might struggle with the order being on time as Sony have a large back order waiting to be built

With the apparent race between Sony and Microsoft in building as many fail boats as possible the only real winner could be Apple with its dominance over mobile gaming.

Bleszinski thinks 'always online future is coming fast'

He can keep it then. Where's the real benefit to the consumer?

I've not really been following this always on thing as I'm not as into tech and gaming as I used to be, but is the general premise that you have to have an Internet connection to use the service?

I'm sure they've done the maths, but I live in a supposedly first world country and would be unable to have an always on connection as my Internet is so utterly unreliable (I live about 4 miles away from my nearest cabinet and have gone to 3G due to the paucity of my connection). Surely I'm not unusual. They must be saying the potential worldwide market for these systems is people living in large conurbations.

The current rumour is that MS have the next Xbox kicking you out of your own games after three minutes offline lol. The talk is that some or all the games will require to be online, the obvious reasoning being stamping out piracy and second hand games*. It would be utter madness, but of course game developers have been getting high on their own methane for years now, so...

* They might as well just drop their trousers for the hackers right now.

While I have to put up with it for checking for pirate copies it will put me off the idea of consoles if they think that they can kill the second hand market this way. It might end up killing the console market. While I can understand their reasoning it does not always make sense. It might have some benefits in terms of theft recovery it might also hinder genuine customers more than it hurts the pirates. If it means that the games that I play are older and no longer supported then I want the games to be free to play without being online. Considering it can take weeks to get online with broadband with a new ISP it will also mean weeks without playing the consoles.

A series of similar problems with always on games will create a PR headache for them.

Microsoft rolls out two-step authentication system

http://www.computerandvideogames.com/40 ... on-system/

Doesn't it mean you're giving MS more info that they can potentially lose/use without much real benefit? :? :|

No, the benefit is when they lose it it will be harder for the people they lose it to to actually do anything with.

Customer accounts for Windows, Xbox Live and Skype will be given the option to upgrade to a two-step system, where either a secondary email address or telephone number can be used for back-up authentication.
The wider aim is to gradually pull Microsoft's services closer together, with one enhanced password system used across multiple devices.

A statement from the company reads: "A Microsoft account is the key that unlocks your experience across these products, from your Windows PC to your Windows Phone, from Xbox to Outlook.com, from SkyDrive and Skype to Office and much more."

In January, CVG reported that Microsoft is planning to replace Xbox Live voice chat with Skype, in a move that will place the VOIP service at the centre of the firm's entire range of communication software.

So that means that losing that one password will mean losing access to many more services at the same time because of inadequate passwords in the first place.

TBH I've always tried to keep things as separate as possible. Some of us don't want the "all-in-one experience" or whatever they're offering.

Trouble is you see the only reason they're offering you all these services for free in the first place is because they actually want to aggregate the data it generates on you together. Aggregated data is much more valuable to advertisers than single points. So they're going to increasingly force you to put all your stuff under a single umbrella because it makes you more valuable to them.

It may not be better for you but they don't actually care what you like or don't like anyway.

Well I already have multiple different passwords for these services anyway. So I wonder how they will identify which accounts are mine?
