That in effect will lead to the end of the second hand market, and I suspect that once people buy a second hand game and get stung they will start to trade in or return their consoles. That will really hurt the market. I doubt that they have thought this through. Will anyone actually sign up for this? They're starting from an incorrect assumption (that families still sit down and watch broadcast TV together). Anything that spawns off that - like achievements for watching adverts or god knows what else - is just the mouldy cherry on top of the sh!t sundae.
The most popular TV network in the USA is Netflix. Their whole premise is flawed.

I have to agree. Many families have multiple TV's so everyone watches something different. My TV is on so rarely that every time I put the TV on it does an update. Region locking is just a way for forcing people to pay high prices. It does nothing to combat piracy.

I was thinking of why? I could only come up with keeping prices high in Europe and stopping cheap US versions appearing here.
