I was thinking of why? I could only come up with keeping prices high in Europe and stopping cheap US versions appearing here.

yup.

Games are generally cheaper to buy from the US, even including postage & duty. There were issues in the past (NTSC vs PAL and what have you) that did mitigate against games being imported from the US but these days with consoles putting out exactly the same signal via HDMI wherever they are, the only reason to impose region locking is commercial protection.

Nintendo and MS use it IIRC, Sony don't. Possibly due to Sony having a much stronger presence in the EU anyway, so they don't feel they have to protect their EU operation as much. Their EU operation is frankly rubbish by any objective measure but it doesn't seem to stop people buying the consoles.

Another reason is different areas have different age rating systems.

Although primary reason is to insure higher returns on the games sold

Xbox One privacy concerns raised regarding Kinect

http://www.computerandvideogames.com/40 ... ng-kinect/

MS and anyone else can piss off with their data harvesting.

The system is designed to have Kinect be an integral part of the experience. It's not the case where you'll be able to remove the camera altogether. But you'll be able to put the system in modes where you can be completely secure about the fact that the camera is off and can't see you," Henshaw said.

Problem solved

If I couldn't use the xbox with kinect, I'd happily duct tape over the camera and microphone. I did just that to my laptop when I bought it and at the time it cost £2000.

But not functionally. The One (apparently) won't work without the Kinect sensor on.

They have said you can put it into modes to protect privacy.

Still too invasive for me. If I want to play a game the last thing I want is it to scan my room.

Its amazing this switch off ability. Playing a game that doesnt require kinect turn it off. If your playing a game or using features that require kinect then of course its going to scan the room. Itherwise it wont work. Thats the point.

Though I fully appreciate the need to scan the room for games that need the Kinect to work, if the console does not work for non Kinect games without it being on why? If the game does not need it why have it on?

Meanwhile, Microsoft program manager for Xbox Incubation Jeff Henshaw told CNET that users will be able to switch Kinect off should they wish.

Thanks for clearing that up for me. From what else I have been hearing about the consoles I am unlikely to buy one. I do not play multiplayer games and so Xbox Live is an irrelevance to me and all the press about blocks on secondhand games means that I doubt that they will have a future for me.
