Post war too. My paternal grandparents kept chickens in their back garden and would slaughter the odd one on a special occasion, although they were mostly kept for eggs. That would have been late 60's/early 70's.

It's still going on now. Lots of people keep chickens and occasionally slaughter one it's just not as wide spread as it used to be.

Going by any survival accounts I've read, I think you'd be surprised what hunger will make you do. It's easy enough to be a veggie when there's a plentiful supply of veggies.

I have been wondering if the human race would survive if they had to kill their own meat.

As others have said, it's only been recently that we've been divorced from the actual process of slaughter and meat preparation. It does drive me nuts that people are happy to eat meat but wouldn't think of harming an animal. Most of the people I know who are squeamish about this are girls.

I think butchering or seeing the meat butchered makes you respect it more and stops you from deep frying it etc :D

Tell that to the rednecks.

I can't really imagine the circumstance where everyone would have to kill their own food. Even if you assume no supermarkets or industrialised meat production, we've had hunters/butchers since we evolved as a society. As long as you can make or do something valuable yourself, you'll always be able to get someone else to give you some meat in return for it.

I suspect this is more likely to happen "post -apocalypse" ie after some event that means (in Britain at least), we're running around looting, killing etc. Take the infrastructure down and people can't survive.

I went vegetarian for a good few years because of a girl. Consequently, I just stopped eating meat including fish. Even now, I can go weeks without eating meat if I don't feel like it. However, I have developed respect for animals/meat and appreciate where food comes from. In the end it comes down to instinct for survival. It wouldn't surprise me if even the hardest vegetarian turned to cannibalism to survive.

My wife's a veggie and so I eat mostly veggie, I also shoot occasionally and have gutted enough rabbits and plucked and drawn enough birds, but it's never pleasant. I think we're in the process of change as a species, but only because we have the luxury of being able to choose to do so.

Well I would not kill an animal unless I had to. Still happy to eat meat though.

When that day comes, I will be looting for the value basmati rice.
