Hobgob.

If it limits speed and not acceleration then I really don't think many people would lose their lives by not being able to avoid a smash through increased speed on the motorway.

If one is diving so close to the limits that +/- 1% will make a difference then the error has already been made.

Now let me see - 3 x plates revolving just before the cameras (at 1 mile intervals) = a comfy 80-85mph can be maintained

Why keep rolling them? Whenever you decide to speed, press a button, fake plates, hit the throttle. After coming off, go back to your normal plates. As long as you don't register the other plates but make sure they are very similar to your normal reg, nobody would be wise. Not much difference between KN1GHT and KN7GHT.

I undercut them at a very high speed. They realise the error of their ways and move back. Most of them do. The ones who are still asleep don't notice.

I feel that on certain parts of the motorway, when the sun is in the sky, the road is quiet and dry, conditions are otherwise excellent and the road is nice and straight, doing 100mph shouldn't be illegal. On the other hand, doing 100mph when the rain is so bad, cars are aquaplaning, should be illegal.

Did a bit of the M25 on Saturday. It had been closed before the junction where I joined, so it was empty. Weeeee........!!!!!!

Do average speed cameras allow you the same 10% + 2 mph that most police forces do before you get done?

Well I haven't received anything in the last few months and I'll do 55mph where possible with average speed cams.

LMFTFY. ;)

Actually, what's the point of doing 55mph over the signed 50mph?
Assuming that the affected stretch goes on for say, 30 miles, you'll cover that in 32 minutes and 43.63 seconds. At 50mph, it'll be 36 minutes. You've saved a whole 4 minutes and 16.37 seconds. Which could all be for nothing if you then go on to meet an HGV struggling past another one on a hill.

Indicated 55mph is actual 50mph in the car I drive. Tested it with a friends sat nav a couple of months back, and it's amazing how many people you can overtake at roadworks.

At limited speed roadworks does anyone else race over cars without going over the average speed? It
s rather amusing as you over take each car by 1-2mph.

I'm usually cursing the big foreign trucks trying to do 70 in the middle lane, in which they do not fit.

They always seem to think they can push the traffic along by tailgating, which makes me want to kill them with death and bricks and fire and pointy things.

I hate it when you're on a NSL dual carriageway. The road is dead quiet and then you come up against one lorry tryig to overtake the other. One truck doing 55mph. The other 56mph. Uphill.

Graaaaaaarghghgh!!!!

Average speed limit is stupid.

We just need to remove all limits - then people can do the speed which they feel comfortable at. That'll cause much fewer deaths.

Remember kids, speed doesn't kill; it's extremely rapid deceleration which does!

Um, okay. I understand your sentiment, but I think your argument is a little flawed.

Without better driver training, allowing indiscriminate speed will only cause more accidents. As it is now, most drivers work on the basis that they can drive flat out without consequences. Penalty points are just a nuisance. How many people do you know who routinely drive at or about the maximum signposted speed because that's the limit? Do they even consider the dangers posed by parked vehicles, cyclists, pedestrians, potholes, weather, and adjust their speed accordingly? Nope, didn't think so.

Speed limits are usually in place for a reason, safety being the paramount one. If drivers actually took into account road conditions, the weather, other traffic, and their own physical and mental condition each time they got behind the wheel, then perhaps speed limits would be irrelevant.

And after being in a horrific accident i'm sure they'll change their ways.

I believe that drivers only drive so carelessly because they are unaware of the consequences of their actions. Personally I pay attention EVERYTHING on the road. Driving to my parents house is more mentally nackering than sitting a 3-hour strategic management exam! But then again i've been in an accident (not cause by me i'll note).

Before then I was quite trusting of other people on the road.

If you go out thinking that you're going to kill someone as soon as you accelerate then you'll be a better driver for it.

Taking away limits is like taking away a safety blanket - people will be more aware and alert because they'll be expecting a bunch of twats zooming past at every turn rather than just sitting comfortably thinking that the limit is keeping them safe, and that no-one speeds.

It's the first thing my father said to me when I started to learn to drive.

However, I think we're going to have to agree to disagree about the speed limit thing. ;)
