Well LED backlighting is gay (assuming it's a Samsung panel, which it probably is). The quality is the same, they're just slimmer. Yet more consumer/lifestyle pandering for those who care not about cost or quality, but just that their tech is unobtrusive. I defy anyone who actually enjoys movies to not be blown away by the IMAX sequences and in fact the whole thing in Blu-Ray. In fact they should do that in the shops. Watch Dark Knight and if you're not bothered, don't upgrade your TV
The PS3 is an alright BD player, but the upscaling isn't gonna be as good as a dedicated BD player, certainly not a recent one. As for DVD player upscaling, that's certainly not even gonna be as good as a PS3 unless you spent significant amounts of money on your player (which Joe Schmo won't have done).
I may be a geek, but it's not all I am. I also have "normal" friends who just like movies and still love the difference. But there certainly is no point if you can't see the difference. I didn't spend £1500 on audio for my car because I wanted to park in McDonalds and blow away the chavs, I did it because I love music. We all have finite incomes and we make (or should make) purchasing decision based on what's most important to us. I'm happy to buy cheaper clothes (and rarely) in order to be able to drive my car, for example.
